Casio DW-291HX-5AV
Tough, Reliable and Ready
The Casio DW-291HX-5AV is a big, rugged digital watch that delivers many of the qualities people associate with a G-Shock, but at a considerably more affordable price.
It offers 200-metre water resistance, mineral glass, a ten-year battery and a substantial protective case, all wrapped around one of the most legible digital displays in this part of the Casio range.
It is built to be practical rather than fashionable, although I think the earthy brown colouring of this particular version gives it more personality than the specification alone might suggest.
For me, the DW-291 is exactly the sort of watch that belongs in the Rugged Digitals category. It is not a G-Shock and does not pretend to be one, but it is clearly designed for owners who want something tougher and more substantial than a basic Casio digital.
A Rugged Digital Without the G-Shock Name
The DW-291 has the sort of appearance normally associated with a G-Shock.
Its large resin case, raised bezel and protected buttons give it a purposeful, heavy-duty design. It looks like a watch intended to cope with work, outdoor use and the occasional knock rather than something that needs to be treated carefully.
However, the DW-291 is not officially shock-resistant in the same way as a G-Shock.
That distinction is important. It would be misleading to describe it as offering the same protected internal construction or tested shock resistance.
What you do get is a substantial resin case, mineral glass and an impressive 200-metre water-resistance rating.
For normal everyday wear, work and outdoor activities, that still makes it a seriously capable watch.
Large and Unashamedly Chunky
The DW-291 measures 50.5 × 50.4 × 13.5mm, so it has plenty of wrist presence.
It is almost as wide as it is tall and has the chunky, squared-off appearance that suits a rugged digital watch.
At 63 grams, it is heavier than a basic resin Casio but still reasonable for something of this size. The resin construction prevents it from feeling excessively heavy, despite its substantial appearance.
It will look large on a smaller wrist, and there is no disguising that. This is not the watch for somebody looking for something slim or discreet.
Personally, I think the size is part of its character. The DW-291 is supposed to look tough and purposeful, and a smaller case would probably lose some of that appeal.
An Excellent Digital Display
One of the greatest strengths of the DW-291 is its display.
The wide LCD uses large digits and provides plenty of information without becoming unnecessarily cluttered.
The main time remains easy to read at a glance, while the day, date and additional indicators are arranged clearly around it.
That may sound like a basic requirement for a digital watch, but not every feature-packed Casio manages to balance information and legibility this well.
The DW-291 gives you a large, practical display that suits the overall purpose of the watch. There is no need to search through a collection of tiny windows just to read the time.
For me, that straightforward legibility is one of the biggest reasons to choose it over some more complicated-looking alternatives.
The Extra-Long HX Strap
The HX designation is particularly important with this version because it comes with an extra-long resin strap.
Casio lists the compatible wrist size as approximately 145 to 235mm, giving it considerably more room than many standard resin Casio straps.
That makes the DW-291HX especially useful for anyone with a larger wrist or somebody who regularly finds that standard Casio straps leave very little spare length.
It may also provide extra flexibility when wearing the watch over a thin layer of clothing.
The longer strap will not be necessary for everybody, but it gives this model a clear practical advantage. It is also worth knowing about before buying because the standard DW-291 and the longer HX versions may fit differently.
The Brown and Tan Colour Scheme
I particularly like the appearance of the DW-291HX-5AV.
The earthy brown and tan colouring works extremely well with the rugged case design and gives the watch a slightly military or outdoors-oriented feel.
It is less predictable than the usual entirely black resin watch, but the colours are still practical and subdued enough for everyday wear.
The lighter markings also contrast well against the darker case, helping the different buttons and functions remain easy to identify.
It is certainly not a subtle watch, but I do not think it is supposed to be. The design is bold, functional and unmistakably Casio.
For me, this is one of those colourways that gives an otherwise purely practical watch a genuine identity of its own.
200-Metre Water Resistance
One of the most impressive parts of the DW-291 specification is its 200-metre water resistance.
That is the same numerical water-resistance rating found on many G-Shocks and is unusually generous for a relatively affordable standard Casio digital.
It makes the watch well suited to swimming, outdoor activities and general use around water.
As always, the condition of the seals matters, particularly when buying a used example or after having the battery replaced. The rating should not automatically be assumed on an older watch unless its condition and sealing have been checked.
From the factory, however, 200-metre water resistance gives the DW-291 a serious practical advantage over many ordinary digital watches.
Mineral Glass
The use of mineral glass is another specification I particularly appreciate.
Many affordable resin Casios use resin glass, which keeps weight and manufacturing costs down but can pick up scratches relatively easily.
Mineral glass offers better scratch resistance and feels like a worthwhile upgrade on a watch intended for tougher everyday use.
It is not impossible to damage, and it does not provide the impact resistance of a fully protected G-Shock construction. However, it is still an excellent feature at this price point.
Combined with the substantial bezel surrounding it, the mineral glass helps make the DW-291 feel like a properly considered rugged digital rather than simply an oversized basic watch.
Multi Time and World Time
The DW-291 offers Multi Time, allowing four different cities to be stored for quick access.
There is also world time covering 48 cities across 31 time zones, plus Coordinated Universal Time.
The Home City and World Time City can be swapped, which is useful when travelling between different time zones.
These are features many owners may not use regularly, but they add genuine flexibility without making the watch difficult to operate.
For travelling, working with people in other countries or simply keeping track of another location, the DW-291 provides far more functionality than its straightforward appearance initially suggests.
Stopwatch, Timer and Alarms
The stopwatch measures to 1/100 of a second and has a maximum capacity of almost 24 hours.
It supports elapsed time, split time and first-and-second-place measurements.
The countdown timer also runs for up to 24 hours and can be set as precisely as one second. That makes it useful for exercise, work, cooking or any situation where a straightforward countdown is needed.
You also get five alarms that can be configured as either daily or one-time alarms, plus an hourly time signal.
It is a strong everyday collection of features and covers practically everything I would expect from a capable digital Casio.
Amber LED Illumination
Illumination comes from an amber LED with afterglow.
You can select an illumination duration of either 1.5 or three seconds.
The light provides enough visibility to read the display in darkness without being excessively bright.
There are more dramatic lighting systems available elsewhere in the Casio range, but the DW-291’s LED does the job it needs to do.
The ability to extend the illumination duration to three seconds is a useful small detail, particularly when checking the display in complete darkness.
A Ten-Year Battery
One of the DW-291’s greatest strengths is its battery life.
It uses a CR2025 battery, with Casio quoting approximately ten years of operation under its specified conditions.
That is exactly the sort of specification I want from a practical digital watch.
There is nothing to charge, no app to connect and no need to think about replacing the battery every couple of years.
When that battery life is combined with 200-metre water resistance and a highly legible display, the result is a watch that can be set up and largely forgotten about.
It is simple, dependable and inexpensive to keep running.
The Useful Little Details
The DW-291 includes a full automatic calendar running through to 2099 and supports both 12 and 24-hour time formats.
You can also switch off the button-operation tones.
That mute function is one of those small features I always appreciate on a digital Casio. It allows you to move between modes or use the functions without producing a beep every time a button is pressed.
These details do not attract the same attention as the water resistance or battery life, but they make the watch better to use on a daily basis.
The Compromises
The most obvious compromise is the size.
At just over 50mm in both directions, the DW-291 will look and feel substantial on the wrist. Anyone wanting a slim everyday digital will probably find it excessive.
The HX strap is excellent for larger wrists, but owners with smaller wrists may find the additional length unnecessary.
It is also important to remember that this is not a G-Shock. The substantial appearance does not mean it has Casio’s official shock-resistant construction.
The case and strap are resin, and the overall finishing is functional rather than premium.
However, these points need to be considered alongside the price and specification. The DW-291 offers mineral glass, 200-metre water resistance, a ten-year battery and a long list of useful functions without the cost of a G-Shock.
There is very little to complain about when viewed in that context.
The Casio Collector Verdict
The Casio DW-291HX-5AV is a tough, reliable and extremely practical digital watch.
Its 200-metre water resistance, mineral glass and substantial case give it genuine everyday toughness, while the ten-year battery makes it exceptionally easy to own.
The wide display is highly legible, the extra-long HX strap accommodates larger wrists and the selection of world time, alarms, stopwatch and timer functions is excellent for the price.
I also think the brown and tan colour scheme works brilliantly. It gives the watch a rugged outdoor character and makes it more visually interesting than another entirely black digital model.
It is large, and it does not offer the officially tested shock resistance of a G-Shock. However, not everybody needs or wants to pay extra for a G-Shock.
For somebody wanting a dependable everyday beater, work watch or outdoor digital, the DW-291 makes an enormous amount of sense.
For me, it is another underrated Casio that proves you do not necessarily need the G-Shock name to get a seriously capable watch. A definite collectors piece.
Tough, reliable and ready – a proper rugged digital with outstanding everyday value.
