G-Shock G-2900F-1V
A 2002 G-Shock Brought Back to Life
The Casio G-Shock G-2900F-1V dates back to 2002, and it's a great example of the slightly different direction G-Shock design was taking in the early 2000s.
More than two decades later, mine certainly wasn't looking as fresh as it would have when it left the factory. But underneath the years of wear was still a perfectly good G-Shock waiting to be brought back to life.
And that's exactly what I did.
Back to Looking Its Best
One of the things I enjoy most about older G-Shocks is just how well they can respond to a sympathetic restoration.
The resin components inevitably suffer over time. Straps become tired, bezels pick up knocks and scratches, and crystals accumulate the marks of years of use. Mechanically, though, these watches can just keepgoing.
My G-2900F-1V was treated to a new bezel and new straps, immediately transforming its appearance.
The crystal was also polished to remove the years of surface marks and bring back its clarity.
Put everything together and the transformation was fantastic. What had been an obviously used, more than 20-year-old G-Shock once again looked almost brand new.
That's immensely satisfying, particularly when the watch underneath still has plenty of life left in it.
Proper Early-2000s G-Shock Styling
There's absolutely no mistaking the G-2900F for anything other than a G-Shock.
It's chunky and protective without being enormous by modern G-Shock standards, and the sculpted resin bezel gives the watch plenty of character.
I particularly like the layout of the display. It's unmistakably from its era and considerably more interesting than a basic rectangular digital display.
The black resin construction of the G-2900F-1V also makes it extremely wearable. It doesn't scream for attention, but it still has enough distinctive detailing to stand out.
With fresh resin fitted, mine now looks remarkably good considering the model dates back to 2002.
More Than Just a Tough Digital Watch
The G-2900 series isn't simply a basic digital G-Shock.
One of its more interesting features is its e-DATA MEMORY, which allows small pieces of information to be stored within the watch. It's a feature that feels wonderfully early-2000s today, coming from an era when manufacturers were experimenting with ways of putting more useful information onto your wrist.
You also get the sort of functionality you'd expect from a well-equipped G-Shock, including world time, alarms, stopwatch and countdown timer.
It's one of those watches where there's far more going on beneath the rugged exterior than you might initially expect.
On the Wrist
Despite its tough appearance, the G-2900F is comfortable to wear.
That's something I've always appreciated about resin G-Shocks. They can look substantial while remaining relatively lightweight, and the shape of the case and straps helps them sit securely on the wrist.
With the replacement resin fitted, mine feels particularly good again. There's none of the stiffness, deterioration or general tiredness that can come with ageing original resin.
It's now a G-Shock I can simply put on and use without treating it like a 20-plus-year-old watch.
And that's exactly how a G-Shock should be enjoyed.
Why Restore an Older G-Shock?
This watch is also a good example of why I enjoy restoring older Casios.
It would have been very easy to look at tired straps, a worn bezel and a marked crystal and decide that the watch had simply had its day.
But those are largely cosmetic components.
Replace the deteriorated resin, spend some time improving the crystal and give everything a thorough clean, and suddenly you've got a fantastic early-2000s G-Shock ready for another chapter of its life.
There's something particularly satisfying about doing that rather than simply buying another new watch.
The Casio Collector Verdict
The G-2900F-1V is exactly the sort of older G-Shock I enjoy owning and restoring.
It has that unmistakable early-2000s styling, plenty of useful functionality and, underneath the ageing cosmetic components, the toughness that made G-Shock what it is.
Replacing the bezel and straps and polishing the crystal completely transformed mine. Instead of looking like a watch that's already lived through more than two decades of use, it now looks remarkably close to new again.
For me, that's a big part of the appeal.
You don't always need to replace an old watch with a new one. Sometimes an older G-Shock simply needs someone to give it the attention it deserves.
Over 20 years old, restored and ready to be worn all over again. That's what I like to see from a G-Shock.
