Affordable Analogue Simplicity with Field-Watch Character
The Casio MRW-200H-1BV proves that a watch doesn’t need to be expensive or packed with technology to be genuinely enjoyable.
It’s a simple, lightweight analogue Casio with a strong field-watch character and just enough diver-inspired styling to make it visually interesting. For me, it’s also one of the best affordable everyday watches Casio produces.
My watch is slightly different from the standard model because I’ve replaced its original resin strap with a cheap black Velcro strap.
It’s a very simple modification, but one that has completely transformed the watch for me.
Straightforward Analogue Timekeeping
Unlike many of the Casios in my collection, the MRW-200H doesn’t have a digital display, alarms, timers or multiple modes to explore.
It’s deliberately straightforward.
You get a traditional three-hand analogue display accompanied by a useful day-and-date window at three o’clock. The hands and white dial markings contrast strongly against the black background, making the time quick and easy to read.
There’s also a rotating bezel, which can be used for simple elapsed-time measurements.
It isn’t a sophisticated watch and it makes no attempt to be one. You set the time and date, put it on your wrist and get on with your day.
That simplicity is a large part of its appeal.
A Purposeful, Highly Legible Design
I particularly like the appearance of the 1BV version.
Its black resin case, black dial and white markings give it a very clean and purposeful look. The red triangle on the rotating bezel introduces just enough colour without making the watch appear overly bright or busy.
Although the design takes inspiration from dive and military watches, it still feels unmistakably like an affordable Casio.
There’s no unnecessary decoration and very little on the dial to distract you from telling the time. Everything has a practical reason for being there.
For something so inexpensive, I think the MRW-200H has an impressive amount of character.
Larger Than It Feels
The MRW-200H measures approximately 47.9 × 44.6 × 11.6mm, so its dimensions suggest a reasonably substantial watch.
On the wrist, however, it feels considerably lighter and less cumbersome than those measurements might imply.
The resin case and bezel keep the standard weight down to just 39 grams. It therefore has enough presence to look purposeful without feeling particularly heavy.
It’s an easy watch to wear throughout the day and one that doesn’t demand much attention once it’s on your wrist.
The Black Velcro Strap
The biggest change I’ve made to my MRW-200H is replacing the original black resin strap with a cheap black Velcro strap.
For me, this has improved the watch enormously.
Visually, the black Velcro works perfectly with the rugged styling of the case and gives the watch even more of a practical field-watch appearance. It looks purposeful without appearing like an excessive or unnatural modification.
More importantly, it has significantly improved the comfort and fit.
A conventional resin strap restricts you to the positions of its adjustment holes. With the Velcro strap, I have almost unlimited micro-adjustment and can position it exactly where it feels comfortable.
That’s particularly useful as your wrist naturally changes size during the day or in warmer weather.
It was a very inexpensive modification, but the watch now sits better on my wrist, feels more comfortable and, in my opinion, looks considerably better as well.
Ready for Everyday Use
One of the most impressive features of the MRW-200H is its 100-metre water resistance.
That’s an excellent rating for such an affordable watch and makes it suitable for far more than occasional careful wear.
Combined with its resin construction, low weight and uncomplicated movement, it makes the MRW-200H a very practical choice for holidays, outdoor activities, working around the house or simply wearing whenever you don’t want to worry about an expensive watch.
The crystal is resin rather than mineral glass, so it will be more vulnerable to scratches. That’s one of the compromises made to keep the watch lightweight and inexpensive.
Even so, this is the sort of watch I’m happy to put on and use properly.
Three Years from a Small Battery
The MRW-200H is powered by an SR626SW battery, with Casio quoting an approximate battery life of three years.
That may not match the ten-year batteries found in some of Casio’s digital models, but it’s perfectly respectable for a conventional analogue quartz watch.
There are no additional electronic functions or illumination systems to operate. Once the watch has been set, there’s very little to think about beyond occasionally correcting the date at the end of a shorter month.
That uncomplicated ownership experience suits the character of the watch perfectly.
Simple Doesn’t Mean Boring
There are obvious compromises with the MRW-200H.
The crystal is resin, the movement is very basic and it doesn’t offer any of the additional functionality you’d find on a digital Casio or G-Shock.
There’s no stopwatch, countdown timer, alarm or backlight.
However, that’s also part of the attraction.
The MRW-200H concentrates on performing the basic job of a wristwatch clearly, reliably and affordably. There’s very little to configure and almost nothing to distract from its purpose.
Sometimes that’s exactly what I want from a watch.
The Casio Collector Verdict
The Casio MRW-200H-1BV is a fantastic affordable everyday watch.
It’s lightweight, highly legible and comfortable, while its 100-metre water resistance gives it a level of everyday practicality that might not be expected at this price.
The black dial and white markings make the time extremely easy to read, and the rotating bezel gives it enough diver-inspired character to stand out from a completely plain analogue watch.
Fitting the black Velcro strap has made mine even better.
The virtually unlimited adjustment allows me to get the fit exactly where I want it, while the material works brilliantly with the rugged, field-watch appearance of the case. It’s a cheap modification that has made a surprisingly large difference.
This isn’t a complicated or luxurious watch, but it doesn’t need to be.
It’s a reminder that some of the most enjoyable watches to own can also be among the simplest and least expensive.
Lightweight, legible and remarkably practical – especially with the right strap fitted.
