Casio MRW-200HD-7BV
A Brighter Take on an Affordable Favourite
The Casio MRW-200HD-7BV takes the straightforward formula of the standard MRW-200H and gives it a noticeably smarter appearance.
Its white dial, silver-coloured resin case and stainless-steel bracelet make it look more refined than the black resin versions, but underneath it remains the same simple, inexpensive and highly practical analogue Casio.
Like my other MRW-200H, however, I haven’t left this one entirely in its original configuration.
I removed the stainless-steel bracelet and fitted a set of black rubber straps, changing both the appearance and the way the watch feels on my wrist.
Its transformation may not be finished yet, either.
A Very Clean and Highly Legible White Dial
The white dial is probably my favourite feature of the MRW-200HD-7BV.
Combined with the bold black hour markers and hands, it provides excellent contrast and makes the watch extremely easy to read. The layout is clear, uncluttered and refreshingly straightforward.
A day-and-date display sits at three o’clock, adding useful everyday information without making the dial appear unnecessarily busy.
The rotating bezel introduces some diver-inspired styling, while the clear dial and simple analogue layout also give the watch something of a field-watch character.
It’s a combination that works surprisingly well.
Smarter in Its Original Form
The HD version of the MRW-200 comes supplied with a stainless-steel bracelet rather than the resin strap fitted to most models in the range.
Combined with the silver-coloured case and white dial, the bracelet gives the watch a slightly smarter and more traditional appearance.
It remains an affordable resin-cased Casio, but the bracelet makes it look more substantial and somewhat dressier than the black MRW-200H-1BV.
In its original configuration, the watch weighs approximately 92 grams. That’s considerably heavier than the 39-gram resin-strap versions, although it’s still perfectly manageable for an everyday watch.
It was a good-looking combination, but it didn’t quite suit how I wanted to wear this particular MRW.
Replacing the Bracelet with Rubber Straps
I decided to remove the original stainless-steel bracelet and replace it with black rubber straps.
For me, this changed the character of the watch considerably.
The black rubber contrasts nicely with the white dial and silver-coloured case, giving the watch a more rugged and practical appearance. It moves the MRW away from the slightly smarter look created by the bracelet and closer to the everyday field-watch style I tend to prefer.
It has also made the watch feel more like something I can simply put on and wear without worrying about it.
The combination of the lightweight resin case, rubber straps and 100-metre water resistance makes it an ideal everyday beater.
It’s another example of how changing a strap can alter much more than the fit of a watch. It can change its entire personality.
Substantial Dimensions without Excessive Bulk
The MRW-200HD-7BV measures approximately 47.9 × 44.6 × 11.6mm.
Although Casio describes the MRW-200 as a large diver-style watch, it’s relatively slim and wears comfortably for its size.
The broad dial and bezel give it plenty of presence, but the resin case prevents it from feeling as heavy or cumbersome as a similarly sized metal watch.
Removing the steel bracelet and fitting rubber straps has reduced some of the weight on the wrist, making my watch feel more relaxed and better suited to casual everyday wear.
Useful without Being Complicated
Functionality is deliberately simple.
The MRW-200HD-7BV provides conventional three-hand analogue timekeeping, accompanied by its day-and-date display and rotating bezel.
The bezel can be used for basic elapsed-time measurements, but there are no digital modes, alarms, countdown timers or additional electronic functions to configure.
There isn’t a backlight, either.
It simply tells the time and date clearly and reliably, which is precisely what many people want from an everyday analogue watch.
There’s very little to learn and almost nothing to distract from its main purpose.
Excellent Everyday Water Resistance
The watch offers 100-metre water resistance, which is one of the most impressive aspects of the entire MRW-200 range.
That makes it far more capable than its modest price might suggest.
Combined with the uncomplicated quartz movement and lightweight resin construction, it’s suitable for daily wear, holidays, outdoor activities and occasions when I don’t want to worry about wearing something expensive.
The crystal is resin rather than mineral glass, so it will pick up scratches more easily. However, that’s an understandable compromise on a watch designed to remain lightweight and affordable.
Three-Year Battery Life
Power comes from an SR626SW battery, with Casio quoting an approximate battery life of three years.
The quartz movement is rated to an accuracy of approximately ±20 seconds per month.
It may not offer the decade-long battery life found in some Casio digitals, but three years is perfectly respectable for a conventional analogue watch.
With no alarms, illumination or additional electronic features drawing power, ownership is refreshingly uncomplicated.
Fit a battery, set the watch and wear it.
Is Another Strap Change Coming?
Although the black rubber straps have already made the watch feel more rugged and comfortable, I’m not convinced they will be its final configuration.
Having seen how much a simple black Velcro strap transformed my MRW-200H-1BV, I can imagine eventually doing something similar with this watch.
A grey Velcro strap could work particularly well with the white dial and silver-coloured case. It would retain the lighter appearance of this version while providing the comfort and almost unlimited micro-adjustment that made such a difference to my black MRW.
Alternatively, I may eventually replace this model with the MRW-200H-7BV.
That model offers essentially the same white dial and overall styling but combines it with a black resin case instead of the silver-coloured case and steel bracelet supplied with this version.
For now, though, the black rubber straps have already moved the watch much closer to the appearance and wearing experience I wanted.
The Casio Collector Verdict
The Casio MRW-200HD-7BV is another excellent example of how much value Casio can fit into a very affordable analogue watch.
The white dial is extremely clear and gives this version a personality of its own. Combined with the silver-coloured case and rotating bezel, it provides a slightly smarter interpretation of the familiar MRW-200 design.
In its original configuration, the stainless-steel bracelet reinforces that smarter appearance and gives the watch more weight and substance.
Personally, I prefer mine on black rubber straps.
The change has made it feel lighter, more comfortable and better suited to casual everyday use. It also gives the white dial and silver case a more rugged character that’s closer to the style of watch I naturally enjoy wearing.
Whether it remains on rubber, moves onto a grey Velcro strap or is eventually replaced by the black-cased MRW-200H-7BV remains to be seen.
That’s part of the fun of owning inexpensive watches like this. You can experiment with straps and different configurations without feeling as though everything must remain completely original.
Affordable, practical and highly legible – with plenty of potential for making it your own.
