A More Refined and Affordable Analogue
The Casio MRW-230H-1E2V takes the simple and affordable formula of the hugely popular MRW-200 series and gives it a slightly more refined and substantial appearance.
It’s still very much a straightforward analogue Casio, built around clear timekeeping and everyday practicality, but the upgraded bezel and distinctive colour scheme give this particular model plenty of character.
For me, it feels like a natural evolution of the MRW-200 rather than a completely different type of watch.
Everything that makes the MRW family so appealing is still present – it’s lightweight, comfortable, uncomplicated and inexpensive – but the MRW-230 has just enough additional detail to make it feel a little more special.
A Familiar Formula with More Personality
At its heart, the MRW-230H is a very simple analogue quartz watch.
You get a conventional three-hand display, a useful day-and-date window at three o’clock and a rotating timer bezel that can be used for basic elapsed-time measurements.
There are no alarms, sensors, digital displays or complicated menus to navigate.
You set the time and date, put the watch on your wrist and get on with your day.
That simplicity is a major part of the appeal. This is a watch designed to perform the basic job of telling the time clearly and reliably without demanding any unnecessary attention.
The Red-and-Blue Bezel
The 1E2V colourway is probably what gives this version most of its personality.
The black dial and resin case are combined with a distinctive red-and-blue bezel in what is often described as a Pepsi-style colour scheme.
It gives the watch a strong marine or diver-inspired appearance without making it look excessively colourful.
The blue section provides most of the colour, while the red portion introduces just enough contrast to catch the eye. Against the black case and dial, the combination works particularly well.
It makes the MRW-230H-1E2V immediately more recognisable than the simpler black MRW-200 models, while still remaining practical enough for everyday wear.
An Aluminium Bezel Ring
One of the most noticeable upgrades over the MRW-200 is the use of an aluminium ring on the surface of the rotating bezel.
It may sound like a relatively small change, but visually it makes a considerable difference.
The aluminium catches and reflects the light in a way that a completely resin bezel cannot, giving the watch a slightly more refined and premium appearance.
This doesn’t suddenly turn the MRW-230 into an expensive watch, nor is it pretending to be one. It simply adds another layer of visual interest to an otherwise straightforward design.
For me, this is probably the biggest improvement over the MRW-200.
The watch retains the rugged simplicity of Casio’s affordable analogue range, but the aluminium detailing gives it just enough extra character to stand apart.
Excellent Everyday Legibility
Legibility is one of the MRW-230H’s strongest qualities.
The large white hour markers contrast clearly against the black dial, while the traditional three-hand arrangement makes reading the time quick and easy.
Nothing on the dial feels unnecessarily complicated.
The hands, markers and minute track are all clearly defined, and the red accents add a little extra visual interest without interfering with the watch’s primary purpose.
The day-and-date window at three o’clock is another useful feature.
It’s something I’ve always appreciated about the MRW range because it adds genuine everyday practicality without cluttering the dial or requiring any additional controls.
Substantial Looks without the Weight
The MRW-230H measures approximately 47.9 × 44.6 × 12.3mm, so it isn’t a particularly small watch.
Despite those dimensions, it weighs only 39 grams.
That low weight is largely due to its resin case and strap, and it makes the watch feel considerably less substantial on the wrist than it appears.
You get the visual presence of a larger marine-inspired watch without the weight normally associated with a metal diver.
The case is slightly thicker than the MRW-200H, but it remains slim enough to wear comfortably throughout the day.
It’s the sort of watch that looks purposeful on the wrist but can largely be forgotten about once you’re wearing it.
100-Metre Water Resistance
The MRW-230H offers 100-metre water resistance, which is excellent for an analogue Casio at this price level.
Combined with the lightweight resin construction and rotating timer bezel, it makes the watch genuinely practical rather than merely something designed to look sporty.
It’s well suited to everyday wear, holidays, outdoor activities and situations where I don’t want to worry too much about the watch on my wrist.
The MRW-230 isn’t trying to compete with a professional dive watch, but the marine-inspired styling is supported by enough water resistance to make it a capable everyday companion.
That’s an important distinction. It isn’t simply borrowing the appearance of a more rugged watch without offering any of the practicality.
Straightforward Quartz Reliability
The MRW-230H is powered by an SR626SW battery, with Casio quoting an approximate battery life of three years.
Its quartz movement is rated to an accuracy of approximately ±20 seconds per month.
There’s no solar charging, Bluetooth connection or automatic time correction.
There are also no alarms, stopwatches or electronic sensors drawing additional power.
It’s simply conventional quartz timekeeping with very little to configure or worry about.
Although I enjoy Casios packed with functions, there’s something equally appealing about a watch this uncomplicated.
The Usual Affordable Compromises
Naturally, there are some compromises.
The crystal is resin rather than mineral glass, so it will be more susceptible to scratches. The case and strap are also primarily resin, and the watch offers only the basic time, day and date functions.
However, none of that feels out of place.
The lightweight materials are part of what makes the watch so comfortable, while the straightforward movement is a key reason why it’s so easy to own.
The aluminium bezel ring also helps lift the appearance beyond what might normally be expected from such an affordable resin watch.
It doesn’t disguise the fact that the MRW-230H is inexpensive, but it gives the design a little more polish and individuality.
MRW-230H or MRW-200H?
The MRW-230H and MRW-200H share the same basic philosophy.
Both are affordable, lightweight analogue watches with clear displays, rotating bezels, day-and-date complications and 100-metre water resistance.
The MRW-200 is perhaps the purer expression of that formula. It’s extremely simple, almost entirely resin and has a straightforward tool-watch appearance.
The MRW-230 feels slightly more refined.
Its aluminium bezel ring catches the light, while the red-and-blue 'Pepsi' colour scheme gives it more visual personality than many of the simpler MRW-200 variants.
I don’t necessarily think that makes one objectively better than the other.
The MRW-200 is ideal if you want the simplest and most understated option, while the MRW-230H offers the same basic practicality with a little more colour and detail.
The Casio Collector Verdict
The Casio MRW-230H-1E2V is a fantastic affordable everyday watch.
It’s lightweight, highly legible, comfortable and uncomplicated, while its 100-metre water resistance makes it considerably more capable than its modest price might suggest.
The Pepsi-style red-and-blue bezel gives this version plenty of character, but it’s the aluminium ring that really separates it from the slightly simpler MRW-200 series.
That small material upgrade catches the light and gives the watch a more refined appearance without undermining the rugged simplicity that makes affordable Casio analogue watches so enjoyable.
There are no advanced functions here and no expensive materials beyond the aluminium bezel detailing.
That isn’t a criticism.
The MRW-230H does exactly what it needs to do: it tells the time clearly, provides useful day-and-date information and offers enough water resistance for genuine everyday use.
For me, it feels like a slightly more polished evolution of the MRW-200 formula.
It keeps the affordability, comfort and practicality but adds enough personality to stand on its own.
Simple, capable and full of character – proof that an affordable analogue Casio doesn’t have to look ordinary.
