Casio SGW-100-1V
A Twin-Sensor Outdoor Watch that’s Tough and Affordable
The Casio SGW-100-1V is a great example of what Casio does so well: producing a tough, practical outdoor watch with genuinely useful features, without the price tag of a Pro Trek.
With its chunky resin case, large digital display and aluminium bezel, it has the appearance of a proper outdoor tool watch. Despite measuring 51.5 × 47.6 × 13.2mm, it weighs only 55g, so it feels considerably lighter on the wrist than its size might suggest.
A Proper Outdoor Casio
The main attraction is Casio’s Twin Sensor, which combines a digital compass and thermometer.
The compass displays bearings from 0 to 359 degrees as well as 16 directional points, making it genuinely useful for walking, hiking and general outdoor use.
The thermometer measures from -10°C to 60°C. Like most wrist-mounted thermometers, though, body heat can affect the reading while the watch is being worn. For a more accurate ambient temperature, it is best to take the watch off and give it time to settle.
That makes the thermometer more of an occasional tool for me, whereas the compass is the feature I can see being genuinely useful when out walking.
Built for Practical Use
The SGW-100 backs up those sensors with an excellent everyday specification.
You get 200-metre water resistance, mineral glass and low-temperature resistance down to -10°C.
There is also world time across 48 cities, five daily alarms, a 1/100-second stopwatch, a 24-hour countdown timer and Casio’s blue-green electroluminescent backlight.
It sits in a useful middle ground. It is tougher and more capable than a basic Casio digital, but it does not become as feature-heavy or expensive as many Pro Trek models.
A Display That Gets the Basics Right
One thing I particularly like about the SGW-100 is the display.
The large digits are extremely easy to read, and the three-section layout shows plenty of information without feeling overly cluttered.
The black and silver colouring of the SGW-100-1V also gives it a rugged, slightly military and outdoors-oriented appearance that has aged remarkably well.
It looks purposeful without trying too hard.
Comfort and Everyday Wear
A case measuring over 51mm from top to bottom sounds substantial, but the 55g weight makes a real difference.
It has plenty of wrist presence without the heaviness that can come with a large metal watch.
That lightness, clear display and strong water resistance make it just as useful as an everyday beater as it is for walking, camping or travelling.
It is the sort of watch you can wear without constantly worrying about knocking it.
The Compromises
There are a couple of negatives.
The quoted three-year life from its CR2025 battery is fairly ordinary by Casio standards, especially when plenty of simpler models manage five or ten years.
The thermometer is also less convenient than it first appears because your wrist can influence the reading.
Neither point ruins the watch, but they are worth knowing if you are buying it mainly for the sensor functions.
The Casio Collector Verdict
The Casio SGW-100-1V is a bit of an underrated Casio.
It is tough, lightweight, extremely legible and has just the right amount of outdoor functionality without becoming unnecessarily complicated.
For walking, camping, travelling or simply as a dependable everyday beater, there is a lot to like. The compass is genuinely useful, the 200-metre water resistance inspires confidence and the large display is one of the easiest to read in this style of watch.
The battery life could be better and the thermometer works best off the wrist, but those are small compromises in an otherwise very capable package.
For me, it is one of those older Casios that proves you do not necessarily need a G-Shock or Pro Trek to get a genuinely capable outdoor watch.
Tough, readable and genuinely useful – a proper outdoor Casio without the Pro Trek price tag.
